    Hi

The last Infantry Regiment to form part of the 6th Division, alongside the 16th and 17th, was the 18th.

This series of pictures came as a set with a driving licence and some useful clues that have enabled me to paint a picture of the owners career, within his regt, the company and his role within it. The pictures very convientiently cover 1922 through to 1932.

Let me introduce you to Hans Jürke (please let me know if my translation is wrong), who was born on 28th Feb 1902 in Berlin and joined the Reichswehr in 1922 and was accepted into the 16th company, Training battalion, IR 18. He is in the top row on the far right of this group shot taken at the training ground at Senne 1923.

The Officer commanding has the the Pour L'merite and all the officers and Nco's are ww1 decorated veterans. I have yet to identify the officer, any help/suggestions very welcome. It is worth noting the variety of uniform with a mix of ww1 and Rw issue plus everyone has a service cap bar one man ! I wonder if he had lost or forgotten it for the group picture ?

The next year finds him still training but in a much more relaxed mood at Munster. Nicely marked up MGK 12/IR 18 Munsterlager 1923 this picture has him right of centre with the soldier on his shoulders , behind the guy with the stick ! Nice mixture of work and drill tunics alongside the 1919 field cap of which they have all been issued with.

Another team shot offering the rather nice stone mosaic of the machine gunner emblem and the company behind. Hans is at the far left of the picture, last man seated.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

I think this is him serving as a hospital orderly as he has a gown on, far left, standing. The large guy in the middle still wears an Imperial cap with RW insignia and a 1919 pattern tunic.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

The band plays on......can't find him in this picture but the drums at the back all still have the Prussian Eagle painted on them and the band leader/conductor is a decorated WW1 veteran.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

I guess they had some time off here......not sure why you would wear shorts on a cart unless your on the way swimming, hans is at the front far left.

Grand tour pictures of the unit visiting the "sites"....Hans is next to the civilian tour guide on both shots and has the Gefreiter stripe showing, promotion has come his way. Circa 1928.

Here is a nice formal picture of him circa 1926 next to another circa 1928. The picture with the dog tells us not only he has gained rank but also his specialist function within the MG company. Hans has the signals badge insignia above the gefreiter stripe and also the dog indicates he was trained as a dog handler whose job was to deliver messages from unit to unit.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

On exercise....with the band leading the way !

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

Resting up in the woods, Hans is lying down at the front next to the guy with the dog far right. His dog can be identified on the far left...............can't believe I can now tell RW dogs apart from others....I am sad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marching. Hans is rear rank right hand side.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

Promotion came around 1929 by the look of things. Here Hans marching with his "boys" wearing the steel helmet and the obergefreiter stripes, all have the signals badge.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

1932 saw him still as an obergefreiter on manouvers at the rear of the picture in the middle of the shot. Nice picture of the NCO's in the front and the umpire with the white band on arm and cap band.

Here is his driving licence which helped start the sourcing of so much of the info in the thread. Nice document in it's own right.

he was obviously very proud of his military career by these momento and I consider myself very fortunate to have had the good fortune of finding these items at auction and also the pleasure of meeting Hans Jürke.

    cheers

    Default Unteroffizier Beule IR 18 : 1925-1933

    Hi

Building on the theme for this Infantry Regiment, the pictures below show the world of soldiering in the RW through the eyes of an NCO. His story begins in 1925 and goes through to 1933 and contains the usual pictures of high jinks, field exercises, barracks life and sight-seeing.

This album also allows us insight into the actual training curriculum a company/section went through as the album has a picture of their inspection record alongside the events and activities undertaken......pure gold for me really!

So without further ado, may I introduce Uffz. Beule in 1930 according to the back of the card.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

The album is not in chronological order so I have re-arranged the pictures for the benefit of continuity. It also contains family pictures which I have not included here but personally quite like as it gives the album a "sense of the time" and illustrates the owners life outside the Army.

The 1925 picture below has the company in PT order except for the Officer's and of course Der Speiss..........the man front row holds the portrait of Hindenburg before them!

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

Next we have Christmas 1926........some dressing up involved here.

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

Then frolics in the snow whilst out in uniform.....They appear to have captured someone who looks remarkably like Stalin............if only!

Despite their thirst they still look fit as the butchers dog..............

more drinking and training, or is it training then drinking ?

Company Commander who has signed the photo and I believe he is (although hard to see the letters) Hauptmann Behnsen who was in charge of Kompanie 6 in 1929.

More parades with the colours and veterans.....

Another fun picture......I do like these comedy ones (might do thread for them in their own right)

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

here is the picture with the 14th training company.........the table of Inspection progress shows they were responsible to OBlt. Harnisch (4 MG KOMP) as inspecting officer and shows that the training lasted 145 days, they had two visits from Blomberg, Christmas and easter holidays were scheduled in, trips to places sight seeing including Oerlinghausen in Westphalia, sports daysand swimming galas and of course quality time training in Munsterlarger !

Die Reichswehr Im Bild: Infantry Regiment 18

In 1932 they also returned to Senne but for a very different reason.................not too sure what they are training for here but if it undercover work they have a long way to go.........

Final picture is captioned on the rear Uffz Korps 1932 and our man is standing, second row far right hand side as you look at the picture.

Many thanks for looking at the thread.
