    Default K98, Identification

    Hi,

I would like to find out if anyone can be of some help, identifying my K98. I know it is a Saur and Son Suhl, but is it LuftWaffe stamps that it carries on both left and right side ?

It is all matching except the front barrel-band
There is no rust on it and the barrel is in reasonable good condition.

What will be the stimated value ?

I like to shoot it, but it kicks like a horse. I also have a US m1 carbine and a P08.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Shed:
Very nice looking 98k!! I can't see any Luftwaffe markings
on the rifle from the photos you provided. Perhaps, you are
confusing the early Wimerian Eagle firing proofs on the
barrel and receiver for Luftwaffe Eagles? If you look on
the right side of the stock just below the firing pin disassembly
"tube/washer" it should have a Wimerian eagle with a
H for army or L for Luftwaffe or M for Kreigsmarine just
below it. If you could provide a picture of that area it
    would clear things up.
    Tks,
    Bob

It's strange to see a K98 made in 1937, bearing the Weimar Republic eagle. Most of the military items after 1934, espcially rifles had third reich markings this late.

    Hi Sitges and Bill:
I pulled some of my 98's out of the safe to check and
my S/42 1937 has Wimerian proofs on barrel and receiver,
also my 243/1937. I have a JP Sauer 1938 that has the
Wimerian proofs on barrel and receiver but my Mauser
Oberndorf 1938 has the "straight wing" (Third Reich)
eagles. Maybe JP Sauer was a little slow in adopting the
    "new" eagle proofs?
    Tks,
    Bob

As an example the two lugers below are 1937 and 1938 dated.

This might show the marking transition.

These two Lugers represent the change from droop wing to stick wing acceptance stamps on Mauser Lugers:

Droop Wing Eagle=DE, Stick Wing Eagle =SE, Mid Test Proof=MTP.

The 1937 dated gun sn. 3271x is acceptance stamped DE/63, DE/63; and mid eagle test proofed. (Top photo.)

The 1938 dated gun shows the transition. sn 7289i, SE/63 SE63 MTP (Bottom photo.)

    Hi Bob,

Thanks. I have looked in that area, but maybe my eys are tired or it is very very faint. I can see something but not fgure out what it is. I will have to get a pair og magnifying glasses.

I will post some picture of my other items.

    Hi,

Have looked carefully and found what looks to be an eagle with down-swept wings and an H ( looks like it is somewhat curved )
So this means HEER and not LUFTWAFFE. Thanks for Yor help.
