1928A1 Thompson: Proof marks?

Hello People,

Big fan of the Forum, very informative site!

So, I have bought a deactivated Thompson 1928A1, fixed Lyman sights, very happy..Sad not to be able to shoot it, but there we go..

The serial number is S-397513. I'm guessing it was made by Savage, around April of 1942..

can anyone tell me what the marking here shown mean? Are these lease lend/ Russian stamps? Proof marks?

Any ideas/ information appreciated,

your gun is a savage thompson but possibly one that was produced before america joined the war i believe that i was one send to the brits but not to sure. there is a slim chance that it is a comercial but you had better check with others first

Those are not lend lease marks for England. That would be BNP markings and the crossed flags. The S denotes Savage as stated and the marks you show are probably the Russian property marks but I'm not sure either. The number on my 1928 is 68038 and it was made in 1939 so your gun was made after that for two reasons. It's a 1928A1 and the high number. The guns they sent the Russians would have been later guns like yours.

ahh thank you i never knew about the markings its true you learn something new each day unfortunatly it had to be BNP oh well

The BNP is a comercial proof mark (Birmingham Nitro Proof). Look for a W for Weedon, thats the depot most went through.

My Brit guns are 1928A1 28545, 313636 and 348222 and M1A1 519053

Bobby, is your early 1928 A1 an overstrike A1? Look closly at the number, maybe show us a pic? If it's 28000 series, then it started life as a 1928 and was changed sometime during the war.
