    Default .303 Id Help

    Hi Boys,
I found a load war time relics last weekend went I went out into the hill with the metal detector. I'm a little stumped on a couple of .303 shells that we found in amongst other items.
At first I thought I they were just a blank due to the "crumpled" top but I am now thinking it may be a Enfield Rifle Grenade round. Does anyone have any info on these types of rounds?
    The Head Stamp reads:
    R^L II c

Which I believe denotes: Royal Lab. Mk2 Cordite.

There are no date marks on any of the rounds, and the photo didn't come out very well, sorry.

    Thanks for any help.

    Banny,
Can you try again and get some photos, as these will help identify your .303 rounds.
    Regards, Simon.

    Hi Banny

Going on the photo shown, it looks like a blank round. A clearer photo would be appreciated though please.

    Regards etc

Right, Just got the IT geek to fix the computer after yesterdays mishap. It was probably all those mucky videos people keep sending me!

Anyway, here are slightly better photos of the .303 rounds.
Does this look like a grenade round to anyone in the know?
    Appreciate your help.

Hi grenade blanks were blackened half way up the case and were loded with a stronger powder not cordite. yours is prob just a bland given the C on the case.

    Thanks for the help.
    According to:
Headstamps of the .303 British Calibre Service Ammunition Round

    Who has an extensive list of headstamps, under the R^L section I noticed 3 different grenade cartridges;
Cartridge Rifle Grenade, Cordite Mks 1 and 2
Cartridge Rifle Grenade, Cordite H Mk 2
Cartridge Rifle Grenade, Ballistite H Mk 1Z

It is from this list that got me thinking that the top one ticks all the boxes.
I'll keep looking to see if I can find what a grenade round looks like.
    Cheers

It does tick all the boxes for a nade round BUT it also ticks them for a straight up blank as well. These too are shown in your list as being available as a Mk 2. The c is almost certainly 'cordite'.

John Brandon is the guy to talk to. He collects 303's

And by the way, I love the round listed at the end....

    Experimental Lachrymatory Cartridge

...... Wonder what they put in it .... tear gas ? Very strange

Does anyone know how to contact Mr Brandon?
