I picked this up at the local gun shop for $425 last week, it's 99% matching, the only non matching parts are the stock and cleaning rod, and bayonet lug. The bore is bright and shiny. The front sight hasn't been updated for the hood, which from what I remember is somewhat uncommon. Every bolt part matches, same with the trigger parts and rear sight parts, plus the top hand guard. I'll take more pictures tomorrow when the sun isn't glaring down on the rifle.

Thanks Luke, might take it to the range before school starts, should do good though. The same store had a bolt mismatch BYF 43 for 390, wish I could've gotten it as well but it went to another collector.

You got the better deal. very nice rifle!!! No need for site hood unless you like the look. It is known that soldat would discard them, because it was easy to get mud stuck in the site. It kind of hard to shoot a rifle without seeing through your sites, well accurately anyways

In case you didn’t know 42 represented the firm Mauser AG Oberndorf. They produced 279,078 rifles that year, yours is one of them.

That's amazing, is there a way to figure out what month a certain letter block was made? My SN is 5183 f

i cant tell what month sorry. I just have a range of the SN production, which yours falls in.

Darn, I also just found a small pressure ring near the muzzle, there's no bulge that I can feel on the outside of the barrel but would it be worth counterboring it if the accuracy is down the drain due to this?

Im not sure, If the rifle is untouched, not messed with. I would do nothing to it. You almost have a 1k rifle. All matching mausers can go for that much. yours is worth anywhere from 600 to 800, maybe 900... i dont have rifle in hand. Collectors like untouched peices keep this in mind!

If you want a shooting rifle RC K98s are good shooters.

I'll just leave it be then, maybe put 5-10 rounds through it then put it away. I've got an Israeli K98 that I can shoot all I want. I'll hopefully pick up an RC at somepoint, though.

You do indeed have a great looking KAR 98k in what appears to be in an unaltered condition. The mere fact you only paid $425 is simply astounding as matching ones usually sell for $1200 to $1500 in my neck of the woods. Franz 44 is correct when advising not to over clean or change anything that may destroy collector value.
