All I can tell you is that it is not for the K98.
Looks like the one for the FN 49 to me.

Hi JWR, It's strange but I was just browsing through a book on WW2 small arms and noticed this type of grenade launcher before logging on here and seeing your post.
I've scanned a picture out of the book, which says it's a grenade discharger for an US M1 Garand rifle. The picture also shows grenades the first being an M9A1 hollow charge anti tank and the second is a practice grenade.

Hi Ade, it is certainly not for the M1 Garand: I think the book has it wrong. I used to have the launcher, the M7A1, for my Garand 20 years ago and they are very different. The grenades are correct though. See here:

Ades correct, its the FN-49 launcher for the Energra grenade. It will probably have a MA in a circle on the left side of the sight arm.
