Hi Ned, Who Neighs, you are right. How do you conclude that Herr billing was "definitely" familiar with horses?

I guess all were "definitely"....... there were 10's of thousands of horses used by German army.

I reached that conclusion as what i genuinely believe the guns use is for would be of little use to someone not familiar with horses.

Having this week spoken to a slaughterman of many years experience, he told me that the method for dispatching of horses is different than that of cattle. For instance, NEVER stand in front of a horse when administering the shot, they have a nasty habit of sometimes leaping forward onto the shooter! Whereas, cows go down like a ton of bricks. Also, he confirmed that the pistol is silenced as to not panic other horses in, for instance, stables, that may cause a broken leg or worse.

In conclusion, i think this weapon is for use by a person who works with or cares for horses, and as such is a specialist piece for expert use only.

Saying that all soldiers would be familiar with horses, and so could be expected to carry/use this weapon is obviously incorrect. As an analogy, most of us drive vehicles today, but how many can repair a simple breakdown? Not as many as you may think!

Very Good Ned, thanks for your input and thoughts also. They seem to make sense.

I never really thought of these theories for usage on Horses. This is very interesting. I will post more pics soon of this conversion.

Hi, here is some info I found on another forum about German WW2 "schalldampfer" silenced firearms. There are many good original photos that many may not have seen. You have to read the whole thread to get all the info and complete picture.

Apparently the development "code name" for the silenced weapons was "HUB-L" or "Haube" which means "hood or cover"
This is what is stamped on this flare gun I show, "HUB"

In the thread they show many weapons they made schalldampfers for. This flare gun is not listed, but it says it not a complete list.

This info fuels my feeling this might be an original Schalldampfer flare pistol I show.

Hi Mike, I do not care about how they grade people really, but this does sound kind of stupid.

The information and photos supplied in this thread on schalldampfers was some what info I was was trying to research. If interested in this "ODD" converted flare gun I have shown, it would be worth reading fully to get the info.

It's OK, if you don't want to, i just thought this would be an interesting topic.

Hello Mike, no problem. i am not so sure about the gun now, but I think you are right about that forum. The number of posts have nothing to do with your knowledge.
There was just some very good photos of some WW2 silenced weapons, and what seems like valid info there.

I havent read the whole thread here...just the first page and kinda skipped to the end...so this might have been mentioned already.

This looks to me like a pair of line throwing attachments. The "suppressor" thingy in the holster is male threaeded (same as the 9mm barrel insert that is in the pistol).

There were a number of line throwing attachments made for most of the german flare guns at the time. The attachment screwed onto the muzzle of the gun and held the launching charge. They were ususally ignited by a 9mm Knall blank.
