A friend handed me a Zeiss scope today - took some photos and did a little checking. It is a Zeiss Zielsechs. Great condition with clear/bright optics. Is there some way to get an approximate date of manufacture based on the serial number? Seems to me that it may be pre-WWII or WWIII production.

Anyone have any experience on these? On value?

He told me that he actually has another that he'd left at home.

Any Zeiss scope gurus? Any Zeiss scope gurus?

markV, great looking Zeiss your friend has! I have some experience with these, I own one myself that is mounted on a 7x57 Mauser and have had others in the past. Judging by the serial # I would place this scope fairly early in the weimar era, early 20's I would say. I have a very nice prewar Mauser sporter that really needs a Zeiss 6x just like this, if he would like to move either one please let me know!! Thanks, Kevin

According the the Zeiss website, the logo you have was patented in 1906 and after WWII, the lens specialists moved from Jena to Oberkocken and it became Zeiss Opton and in 1954 it was just Carl Zeiss- BUT there was apparently a long lawsuit with the factory that remained in Jena, but they don't note if the old logo continued to be used in the post-war period in the east. Actually, you might be able to find out the manufacture date by asking Zeiss...
    Ohhhhh- pillage then burn...
