    Default Family bring-backs - Two rifles/Two Theatre's of War

    Hi All,
Here are a couple of rifles I thought I would share that were brought back by family members who served during WWII.

The first item I recently acquired from my Grandfather's half-cousin (his father was half-brother to my great grandfather). The rifle was brought back by, Karl E. Bohn, my grandfather's half-brother (1st son of my great grandmother). Hope that makes sense!

In any case, below is the enlistment info for Karl as well as a photo of Karl during his service.

Karl's service is a little murky as he is wearing the PTO ribbon on his uniform, however his daughter has a report obtained from NARA confirming service in the ETO. In addition, I have an SSI, found in my grandfather's personal effects for the 1st Cavalry Division. I'm fairly confident this was Karl's as my grandfather never served in the military. As we know, the 1st Cav served exclusively in the PTO.

The rifle Karl brought home, however, is a Yugo M24. This rifle was captured by the German's, as evident by the Waffenamt's present on the takedown discs. So, the lineage of this rifle is Yugoslavian > German > US (Karl). The sling is post-war, civilian, likely added by Karl (looks similar to an M1 sling).

In short, Karl must have served in two theatre's.

The next rifle was given to me by my father in-law. The rifle belonged to his uncle, Walter E. Haesler, who served in the Navy during WWII.

Walter enlisted in 1939 and was discharged in 1945. During the first 4 years of his enlistment, Walter was stationed at the Naval Reserve Aviation Base in Philadelphia.

In August of 1943 he appears on the USS Niobrara and held the rank and rate of Chief Pharmacists Mate. I found no record of Walter in the USMC muster rolls, so I don't believe he was a corpsman.

The Niobrara was active during Iwo and Okinawa, so it's likley the rifle was obtained at one of these battles, possibly directly by Walter or more likely through trade.

Below is a photo of Walter from 1953, his BIRLS file and a sampling the the USN Muster Rolls:

Now onto the rifle...It's a Japanese Type 38 and comes with it's original Type 30 bayonet, with scabbard and leather frog.

The rifle contains the Koishikawa Arsenal Mark (Tokyo). Based on the serial #, it would have been manufactured prior to 1935.

The bayonet contains the same arsenal mark and would have been manufactured prior to 1936.

I'll let the photo's do the rest of the talking on this beauty...

    Thanks, Gentlmen!

@ Tom - I do indeed consider myself fortunate and am very proud to be the caretaker of these rifles. I just hope my son or daughter (ages 3 and 1 respectively) keep these in the family and don't sell them to the highest bidder, after I'm dead and in the ground!
