but stock length has no efect what so ever on recoil , the but length has to do with eye sight relations recoil and acurasy has more to do with eye co -ordination cheers ian
the longer a mans arms , the more raech he has the longer the stock ,, it ha s nothing to do with acuarcy cheers ian

the enfield no4 is arguably the most acurate servise rifle ever made
1,000 mtrs pull bull is not unusual and that is with iron sights
but i admit that is with thous of us that Know the number 4 T
the L42 7.62 is still used today world rknowend as the most acurate rifle in the world ,,,, besides the barret ,

I believe this may be an Irish contract as well. The No.4 MK2 has a slightly longer buttstock which greatley reduces the felt recoil as compared to the MKI.These guns are a pleasure to shoot
but length has nothing what so ever to do with recoil
but length has to do with a soldiers size and shape
recoil has happend already , the bullet has left the barrel at the same time as you feal the kick ,,, but size does not have any difference ,,size is only matched to an individual soldier and then only snipers
recoil is an opposite effect from the bullet

I think we should nail the myth that these rifles were not delivered because of the 'troubles'. This I tend to believe was a speculative reason which a well known American rifle expert came up with. First off, in 1953 there were no troubles and there was no tension between Britain and Ireland. There was no political reason that these rifles were never delivered. Far more likely is an economic one. The economy was in dire straits back then. (Some things never change) Obviously the Irish army re-equipped with No4s in the fifties to replace their NoIIIs even though as early as 1951 fears were raised that with the British army replacing their Enfields. There might be an issue with .303 ammunition.

In fact 6000 surplus, mostly brand new Irish army No4s were sold to a Canadian company in 1991. The rest were dumped in the Irish sea. I remember seeing many brand new N04s in the cases in the armoury. I was even there when one was taken out and cleaned. It looked exactly like the one in the picture. I presume most of those sold were brand new unopened rifles but a lot would have been used although in otherwise good condition.

If you read my Quote I said "FELT" recoil. I have tested the MKI and my MK2 side by side and stand by my statement .
I shoot these guns quite often.

I think you're both right, there is less recoil but the longer butt was for taller men. That's how it was explained when I was serving. We had both types of butt although the longer one was less common. Most of us weren't exactly 6'10".

Jason, I was googling when I came across this list. Unfortunately as you can see it puts your rifle out of the Irish contract and straight into the Burma contract. Which I think is more exotic.

    PF301548-PF304047 Anglo-Egyptian Sudan
    PF309348-PF359347 Irish Republic
    PF359748-PF359817 Zambia
    PF359818-PF359952 Singapore
    PF359953-PF360052 Jamiaca
    PF360053-PF360202 Trinidad
    PF360203-PF360238 St. Vincent
    PF360239-PF360258 St. Kitts
    PF360259-PF360459 War Office
    PF360460-PF381159 Uganda
    PF361160-PF361259 Parker Hale
    PF361260-PF401086 Burma
    PF401087-PF401459 Allocated for T conversion
    PF404157-PF404206 Parker Hale
    PF405393-PF405412 St. Vincent
    PF405513-PF405712 Admiralty contract
    PF405813-PF405848 Fulton
    PF407649-PF407648 Trinidad
    PF407649-PF407728 Zanzibar
    PF411229-PF411264 Fulton
    PF411265-PF411461 Kenya
    PF411462-PF411471 Hong Kong

Other lists show that 50,000 were made for the Irish contract which is extraordinary as the Irish army was never much more than 10,000 strong other than in the war. No wonder they weren't all delivered.

However some were and 6000 of those went to Canada. So to nail another myth not all Irish contract rifles out there were undelivered. Obviously if it was used it was delivered but if it was still wrapped the jury is still out. Presumably the earlier the number the better the chance.

I wonder what number Archmoco's is?

jason i assure you the length of the but has no difference to the recoil ,now barrel length that is a different matter try the no5 that kickes like hell
but honestly but length has no efect at all , i have fired 1000s of round with a no4 ,i was in the army shooting team at bysly and ive put down many 1000s of rounds 7.62 from the L rifle cheers ian
it sounds to me like the but you feal less rcoil with ,is the but that fits your size the best ,thats one of the reasons that there are different sizes
