An excellent piece ! for those casual browsers, the "Red nine" version of the Broomhandle, was commisioned and produced for the Imperial German Army at the height of the Great War, and was so marked with a a "9" on the handle so that clumsy troops would not attempt to load the wrong calibre ammunition !

Further to the information regarding the KL in the area, Lager-Sylt was actually not the only one. Indeed four of KL-Neuengamme's 80 or so subcamps where located on the islands, namely Sylt, Helgoland, Borkum and Norderney. Together, they comprised the Alderney camps, which held around 6,000 prisoners throughout the war. The prisoners were mostly used as a slave labour force to construct the various fortifications around the islands. SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Max List controlled the Sylt camp, which held Jews, and Norderney, that held Soviet and Polish POWs. During List's reign, hundreds of prisoners died at these camps.

Wow - nice Mauser - great to have the local history to go with it - when I say I great, I do so with the sincerest respect for the prisoners in those camps, of course. Nice find.
