As someone who is endlessly jealous of our contributors from the rest of europe who keep finding piles of rusty relics, I thought I would post this picture of what I found last September, to encourage all of you in this country you can find stuff in the UK.

It is work still in progress when I get bouts of enthusiasm.

Basically found while excavating a Lancaster crash site ,the top cover opens and closes post crash fire had burnt on the clay and the site was wet so very rusty but complete with heater plates on the sides, was about 5 feet down.

Sorry I should have said its a .303 Browning a turret version denoted by the conical flash eliminator, yes I was amazed when it came up, there is damage to the back end and the bolt is embedded right back suggesting it's from the rear turret, or the mid upper which may have been facing rearwards

No it wasnt loaded, the aircraft was on a training flight, oddly there was no ammo anywhere near it underground but when we earlier investigated the site several times we picked up lots of cases, heads etc on the surface

Aircraft inexplicably went out of control all crew killed, dig was legal and licensed, I wont divulge any details as we are continuing work on the site this year due to the awful diabolical weather last year.

All crew were recovered and are buried immediately following the crash
