Right, I've realised that I have not updated the thread with pics/info for a while... so here goes with some more pieces and pictures!
Firstly a few pics of the MG42... now on an original WW2 lafette tripod that I managed to get for it, the tripod is painted in post war Norwegian capture green, but is all original parts:
Second up is my new MG34 - this one is a early type, dated 1937 and coded "BSW" - and has a few of the early features such as the MG13 bipod, the machined type top cover and the barrel jacket with more ventilation holes, often known as a 'four hole'. Also has a metal tipped reinforced bakelite buttstock for cold conditions.
Also the barrel, as can be seen through one of the holes, it appears to also match the gun!
