    just aword of advice
i would get rid of the cabble tie alow the slide to go foward and ease the hammer
if it has been like that for nearly 30 years i will be suprised if the hammer spring is not over stressed by now
    cheers ian

if those waffenampts read as WaA135 then they are correct for mauser werk oberndorf
so your p38 was made by mauser in 1944

Wow thank you gentlemen very much. I am here in the States and am trying to find a reputable person to appraise it. Having suffered a few strokes, I am 'cleaning' house and wanted to make it available to collectors. Any suggestions on how I should do that?
    Thank you Billy

Ian, how much do you think this is worth here in the States to collectors. I am in South Carolina, know of any in my area?
    Thank you,

There was a gentleman here in the states at the P38forum.com that had reservations about the stamped number on the front of the holster. Is there anyone here that could shed some light on this?
    Thank you Billy

The holster looks authentic, but there a great many replica P38 holsters around. There were two main types of P38 holsters, hard leather (which this one is) and soft leather. This P38 appears to have little metal finish left, and that will impact value severely. Also, I have not seen any 1944 byf P38s which show so much evidence of tooling marks. Another important feature is if all parts with numbers (including magazine) match up, i.e., are all parts original to this gun. I can't provide an estimate of its value, as that's not possible to do without my personally examining it. I will say it will not bring anywhere near top dollar due to its condition, which seems to me to be no better than fair. There are some internet gun auction sites (such as Gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com) you may wish to look at to determine what generally similar P38s are bringing, as that's perhaps the best indicator of current value. You could also sell it there (Just like eBay, but the legalities of selling and shipping are a little complicated).
