Sorry-it's still a Spanish M1916 Short rifle and will ever be so.

No need to be sorry. I am grateful for everyone's advice. I am brand new to the Mauser world.
Thanks for your help in identifying the rifle.

Re: Perhaps a pinned thread on nothing but WWII 98k rifles?
I've come up with a rather hair-brained idea... I want to take my K98k down to just the stock and heat it up with a hair dryer. The first time I shot my rifle, the wooden foregrip got warm and started dripping what I assume was cosmoline. As a result, the foregrip of my rifle is a lot less reddish in color, and feels a lot less tacky. I'm hoping that going little by little with a hair dryer on fully blast will help melt away the cosmoline so I can just take it off with a rag. Does anyone have any comments or concerns about this idea?

notice it has early Weimar eagles. Early S-42 Mauser code. Very good looking mauser. Believe it was costly. Best wishes.
