This revolver was a development of the previous M1878 10.4 mm but in a new 7.5 mm calibre-this started the trend in European pistols of having rifle calibre rounds of dubious power in military use!
This is a fixed frame, single gate loader-conservative, but typical of military pistols of the time-the weapon was adopted from 1883 onwards and remained in production until the end of the 1920s when it was replaced in manufacture by the similar M1929 revolver. It remained in Swiss use until the mid 1950s by which time it was a military antique.
As I mentioned in a previous post on the M1929, the revolver type stayed in both use and production by the Swiss after their adoption of various Luger automatics after 1900 due to it being cheaper to make and needing only one hand to operate for mounted/bicycle troops.
This particular example was made in 1921, one of 350 made that year-like the M1929, it's very well made and looks it even more so with its strawed parts. The 3rd photo shows the loading gate open and the ejection rod deployed. It's still mechanically tight and I shall shoot it at some stage next year.
