It doesn't look like its got the 2 lugs at the front for holding the capbadge, so I would say its probably not an M27 Vickers, hope this helps

A chap who lived next to us, was in the british army, he passed away in the 1970's, could it be a WW1 bringback, no markings on the lid...

Darren, a lucky find indeed !...it is not a Vickers but IMO a model 1916 German helmet shell, either size 66 or 68, judging by the size/shape of the vent lugs, see this thread, Where can i get replacement Liner for Irish Vickers Helmet???, and compare shape of the helmets, the Vickers "flowed" from visor to skirt, where as your M16 is more severe.
