This m40 helmet has during it's service time had 3 different types of liners. The first one was the original German, the second one was the early Finnish replacement liner (three pads - like the German m16) and after that the typical post war liner type.
The hole was made for the second liner.

You really need to look inside the helmet shell for markings on the two German helmets as Finland used alot of German m55 helmets that look just like the m40 helmets but lack the markings in the shell , In Finland you can still buy m55 helmets quite cheap from the Finnish army , the first helmet has the extra holes drilled for one of the Finnish liners that was fitted to it at sometime
