    We used to do it too (Danish army).
    Wrap and / or pad everything (with tape, paper-towels) where metal meets metal.
    If you are on patrol, you want to be as silent as possible. Sound and light travels far in the dark.

    You are more than welcome oldsteel , this canteen does indeed fit in with the equipment used during this time frame.

    James I assume the chain has been taped to stock it rattling about and making a noise...basic "stealth" techniques
