Default WWII Italian Pith Helmet. Does anyone know what the + stands for?

OK, last post of the day...promise....This is a pretty standard M 28 WWII Italian Pith Helmet with feathers. Insignia is Engineer/Sapper but not sure what the "+" may indicate. I've read it could mean the soldier was part of an "un-assigned" unit. But not even sure what that means.

I've seen quite a few Italian insignia with the "+" so hopefully someone out there knows.

    Any help? Thanks!

    Size 60. No maker marks.

    Rich,

Double checked the Pith. Appears that the emblem has never been removed given the tarnish and age but you never know.....but not sure about the cockeral plumes. The Pith obviously has the slot to attach the plume. Would there be another type of feather?

Here is a pic attributed to the Bersaglieri....
