Ah, The Surrey Commons! Many memories of traing there myself, sweating, freezing, sweating, you get the idea!
About 7 or so miles from Godalming, Surrey the area today is under the care of The National Trust and is a tourist spot with picnic areas etc. A different take on living in the field eh?

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
Thank you gentlemen for the additional photos and information, I believe my relative is pictured in the photos of the 185th Officers.
Thank you all again.
Thought he looked like the last man sitting on a chair, at the end of the third row.
But I'm not sure, thanks for the great Photos.
I also know he ended up in The Engineers but I think that was in 1918.
My son totally agreed with your choice ( & mine too, second row up, last in the row on the chair), amazing we can discuss this worldwide !

Paul
Indeed it makes it feel like a very small world.
