Yes, indeed a great find. I would think he would have been eligible for the Aug.-Nov. Clasp to the 14 Star.

This prompted me to refer to Westlake's " British Battalions in France & Belgium 1914", under 1st/SLI.
That battalion had approximately, and 100 "missing" during the Retreat from Mons, and the war diary of the 11th Brigade listed 36 officers and 1,153 o/r casualties from August to December, 1914, more than 100% of a full strength battalion.

Entered France on August 21st, and captured 5 days later! Well, his chances of survival through the course of the war would have been very low, otherwise.
