An old contemptible serving with 1st RWF during October 1914 when they lost over a 1000 officers and men, where the commander Colonel HOS Cadogan was killed.

A book on his life includes a detailed account of his earlier career and also of the final campaign during which so many men lost there lives to stop the German advance.

A lucky find local to me today, his war medal clearly marked to him and in lovely condition, though the ribbon has seen better days but not a surprise considering the age.

For gallant conduct and devotion to duty on the 20th and 21st October 1914, in rescuing the wounded and attending on them under heavy shell and rifle fire and for the fine example shown by him to the stretcher-bearers.

The destruction of the 1st battalion RWF has gone down in regimental history, with the account in The road to Armageddon, the life and letters of Lt Colonel Henry Cadogan RWF MID*

Most of his other medals were sold in the 1970's but his BWM and Victory do not appear in the list of his medal then sold, which included medals for South Africa, the Queens SA and Kins SA, both with clasps etc.

    nice find.
Sadly not mate, it has been renamed, my first faked British medal. Oh well it was bound to happen sooner or later. It has been reground and had this name added to it. It will be returned along with some choice words.

Also to show where it is thinner where it has been ground, all around the bottom half where the naming is.
