To me it looks like a reduction of the oriental scimitar sword made by a french soldier...with what was available around him...it's a nice piece of history

"The Orient", 100 years ago referred to the region sometimes called Asia Minor and specifically around Turkey and beyond, possibly into Syria and Iraq. Most likely Arab areas, hence the scimitar shaped blade.

Most of this so-called ‘trench art’ was produced in the postwar years, often by veterans trying to eek out a living, or others simply cashing in.
The chances of being able to manufacture items like this in a trench are pretty remote!
Lovely item, none the less, and one of the better examples.
