    Gentlemen:

I just picked up a WWI helmet (in USA). Brodie/Mark I type (I think). Round felt pad in crown, riveted to shell and to remains of leather chinstrap (pretty chewed up).

    Marked "ZB69"...at least I think it's a Z. Might be a 2.

There are three small holes drilled just inside the rim on each side. First hole is level with bail rivet, and next two ahead, at 3/8" intervals.

No finish remains although I haven't had a chance to clean it properly.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Never seen holes like this before. And no, they aren't the holes for a South Africal havelock, which are on the back.

How did tankers attach thheir face shields?

Another question if I may: Yesterday I was offered a shiny aluminum helmet (similar Mark I shape), ratty liner and badge hole on front. Owner laughed at my offer and told me it was a US WWI parade helmet worth megabucks. I passed. Did I do right?

Again, any information will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Pat G.

Sounds like you have a US made M17 helmet there. The holes may indicate civil defense use, but not sure. No idea about the aluminum helmet.

    Gentlemen:

Thanks for your responses and ref.

It seems I have a M-17 drilled for Wilmer face veil, with possible AEF divisional identification.

    Your help much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Pat
