An Incredible place, Verdun. The number of monuments there to see would take a Very long time to visit them all! Did you get a chance to visit the "Trench of Bayonets"? I heard that it has sadly been vandalized now and there is very little to actually See there now, but it is still an amazing monument to visit and read about. I would also recommend the "Village that died for France" memorial site of the lost village of Fleury-devant-Douaumont, whose lands were so contaminated with poison gas, unexploded ordnance and the dead themselves, that it was never rebuilt at all-one of many "lost villages". A Very moving monument to visit and contemplate the ghosts of the lost.
