I would venture to say it is authentic.
I've seen many arguments about whether or not these insignias were painted during the war or just after the armistice for parade use. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the general consensus is post armistice. However, it would have been the original wearer of the helmet who painted it on, and this one looks to have proper aging, so I would say it is an original piece.

    Thanks!

The pine tree represents the U.S. 91st Infantry Division. I believe it's authentic, but as Quinn said, no idea if it's WWI wartime or post Armistice.

Looks good to me also. I agree with the comments earlier. I have my Grandfathers WWI helmet. It doesnot have anything painted on it. He was assigned to a field hospital. He did survive a gas attack once. He really didn't talk about that much. I think a lot of men died in the area when it happened. Nasty part of history.
