WW1 Helmet

I just found your site and guys I must say I am very impressed. I didn’t even know places like this existed. Anyway I have a question: A buddy of mine gave me this WW1 helmet and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the insignia is? Is it real or just something someone put on the helmet? Thanks in advance and again I love the sight.

To me looks like US 1 WW helmet, but really I can't say nothing about the emblem

The insignia is for messengers in the US Civil defence.

I thought that might be what it was, but was hoping for some heroic US Army group like the Big Red 1 or something. Thnaks for the help. I remember in the 1960's the symbol and the term was everywhere, not too much anymore. I think if you asked most American's under 35 years old what the Civil Defense was, they wouldn't have a clue. The sirens are now called Tornado or Emergency Alert sirens.
