Hi Guys, this little miniature painting on ivory came into work via the boss and a little bit of research has paid off:
WW1 British miniature portrait on ivory in a silver framed mount hallmarked London 1918 depicting Captain William Michael Victor Banbury of the Connaught Rangers. Size approx 75mm x 60mm. Capt Banbury was killed in action 17 August 1917. Born in 1885 and educated at Eton, and was gazetted to the Regiment on 23rd May 1906, and joined the 4th Battalion then in Malta. He became Lieutenant on 24th March 1910 and resigned his commission on 23rd November 1912 going on the reserve of officers. Upon the war breaking out he was, on September 14th made a Temporary Captain in the 11th (Service) Battalion then forming. He went to France with his Battalion in the summer of 1915, and on August 17th 1917 when advancing with his Company under a very heavy shell fire, he tried to place a wounded Rifleman under cover and whilst doing so was struck by a shell and killed instantly. His Commanding Officer wrote: "He did splendidly on July 31st....... The success we gained on the 31st was largely due to his gallant leading." He appeared in a number of London plays as a boy was the Grandson of Admiral Sir William King-Hall.
Going under the hammer on Nov 22nd.
Cheers, Ade.
