WWI uniform - naval or merchant marine?
My great-grandfather (1871-1937) was born in England, and immigrated to Canada's West Coast in about 1895. He was a master mariner on the West Coast and our family history claims that when war was declared in 1914, he returned to England to join the Royal Navy.

This is the only picture I have of him. Can anyone tell me if the uniform he's wearing is that of the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, or merchant marine?

    Many thanks in advance!

Going by the hat and reefer jacket, it seems to look like a British Royal Navy Officers uniform. William

    Hi, welcome to the forum!

Certainly not Merchant Navy. I am not expert enought to say RN or RCN.

    Cheers, Ade.

British Royal Navy Senior Officer's Peaked Cap

Here is a link to compare the hat badge in the 2 photos. The one in the photo link does not have the white cover that your grandfathers does, but you can see the badge fairly clear, in any case. William

    Wow - that was quick!

Thank you both, gentlemen. And thanks for that link to the peaked cap, Wagriff. Now I know what to look for, I think I can see the similarities between the cap badges.
