Award document for the Wound Badge in Black dated 21/10/1941 and signed by the Chef Artz at the Reserve Lazarett Ludwigsburg .
Issued to Josef Kurz for a wound which took place on 6th July 1941 near Beresina , Russia during the early stages of Operation Barbarossa .
The most interesting thing about the document is that Kurz was a member of 11 Kompanie SS Regiment 11 .
SS Regt 11 was a relatively short lived unit which at the time was part of one of the most famous SS Divisions the 2nd SS Division Das Reich . SS Inf Regt 11 was formerly SS Totenkopf Standarte 11 and was attached to Das Reich on 1st December 1940 . The unit was disbanded in early 1942 and personnel were absorbed into other formations of the Waffen SS . At the time of the action of the wound the Regiment was Commanded by SS Obersturmbannfuhrer Wim Brandt who designed the famous Waffen SS Camoflage clothing in 1936 , Brandt was Killed in action on 15th/7/1941
This is the only document I have seen to this particular short lived unit.
The Wound badge document comes with his discharge certificate at the end of the war at the discharge centre of the US 1st Infantry Division , the Big Red One showing he was still in the Waffen SS with the rank of SS Hauptscharfuhrer . Discharged on 30/6/46 it confirms that he had scars on his breast and right thigh a foreign body in his right lung and a heart defect .
Research with the WASt confirmed that Josef Kurz passed away in October 1995 .
