Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse cleaning options.?

Hi Gentlemen,
I have this cross and the outer rim is quite dirty I think, I have rubbed a cotton bud along the edges and a small amount of grime has come off.
I don't want to remove any patina so how far can I go before destroying any aging on this award? From what I can see there in certain light a nice glint of light reflecting back.
I know this is a contentious area, clean or not.
I don't want to use any chemicals.
So any information would be of great help.

I think you have done as much as you need to.

Don't do anything else. It is fine.
