Yes, I'm speaking from experience but not from my experience:-). I got that price from a book "Estonian Ostbatallionen in Ostfront." During war German reichsmarks lost their value and were quite useless because there were a shortage of every kind of goods. For example (according to the same book) in 1941 Estonian volunteers got 1 Rmk extra to their salary in the combat situation per day. I remember my granduncle told that he earned 120 Rmk per month and that was not too much. Anyway, these prices are pretty cheap. It is hard to compare but maybe 5Rmk is around 20 euro or so. Or even less.

I do not belive everyone was allowed to buy these awards. Maybe only persons who had earned it? Prices seem to be quite reasonable. For example 30 minutes in a cheap brothel costed around 5 RMK.

Given that in 1939 70% of Germans had a monthly income of 200Rm or less a nice, boxed EK was going to set you back about a days wages, give or take.
