Original 1914 EKII and the ribbon is for the "so called" Hindenburg Cross.

Also known as the Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer 1914-1918.

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

What you have is a WWI EKII and a ribbon bar which represents it, as well as the
commemorative Hindenburg Honour Cross w/swords for combattants.

Both Ade and Adrian are correct. Nothing 'odd' about these two medals
being together though - it is probably the most common WWI
combination - but this was only during and after 1934
when the Hindenburg Cross was instituted.

Below are both full size medals on a parade mount bar:

I got the feeling you got them attached as one piece, but no - they are
two singular items - probably to keep them together and prevent them
being separated. The ribbon bar was worn to show the soldier
was in posession of the full size medal awards.
