Went for a visit to the HMAS Castlemaine corvette here in Melbourne
Built in 1942 one of 60 in her class and the last afloat

When I was racing Speedway bikes in the UK back in the early 90s, a sponsor of my brothers was once an ASDIC operator on a Flower class Corvette. He reckoned he spent 4 years listening to whales, shoals of fish and undersea rocks and finished the war with only a 1/4 claim on a U-boat (near Gibraltar). The kill was shared due to the other ships involved in the action, the U-boat was only 'likely sunk' due to oil and debris that hit the surface, whether it was a genuine kill or a decoy discharge by the U-boat, no-one could be sure. (Most boring time of his life he claimed!)

Have to add that today is the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the HMAS Sydney
Lest We Forget


In May 1940, HMAS Sydney joined the British Fleet and saw fierce action in the Mediterranean. The Sydney escorted troopships after her return to Australia in February 1941, and it was on return from one such mission that she became involved in an engagement with the German raider Kormoran off the West Australian coast. Although there is some doubt about the circumstances of the battle, HMAS Sydney suffered considerable damage and was lost with all 645 crew. Her resting place was a mystery for many decades, before finally discovered in 2008.
