Could the centre as been lost by pure bad luck or perhaps because of the script on the reverse side?
Spain being a fervish Catholic country in that time.
Maybe the script offended the owner but he still felt he deserve the medal? Just a tough.

No, I don't think so at all. It was a very, very prestigious decoration and highly coveted by Spanish officers. Generals as famous as Varela or Franco himself had the highest category.

Santi, as we know Franco started his military career in Morocco.
Franco was a young brave officer in Morocco during the Riff War, surviving a very serious wound in the abdomen in 1916. This was the beginning of a relation with Moroccan troops who believed he was blessed with baraka or blessed by god. They would follow him anywhere as will be seen 20 years later.

Now for the script on the Mehdauia medal. The reverse of that beautiful award translate as: "Muley el Mehdi Ben Ismail Ben Mohamed, glorifíe it God". That medal really triggered my attention specially that I have a soft spot for the Spanish Civil War period. Jack

You can congratulate him. It's a small museum, but with a very complete collection IMHO

    Santi.

    P.S. Enjoy the city
