Although this is just a single grave to one of France's fallen, it is still a war memorial in its own right. This is believed to be the very last surviving WW1 grave marking the exact spot where the soldier was killed in action and buried. The simple wooden cross is topped with the helmet that Edouard Ivaldi was wearing when he met his end.
Yesterday, I got back from a 13-day cruise around the UK and Ireland. (We weren't very lucky with the weather, but otherwise I loved it.) As expected, it gave me ample opportunities to continue this thread. Here we go.
Photographed in Inverness, Scotland, this is the Regimental Memorial to the 79th Cameron Highlanders, unveiled by Queen Victoria on 14 July 1893. On the occasion of the regiment's bicentennary in 1993, the statue was refurbished, with the eroded names re-carved and the railings around the Memorial restored:
