Default 1st Airborne Reece Squadron Arnhem 1944 - jeep markings

    Hi,

According to all my various books and sources a recce jeep at Arnhem would be marked with a white 41 over a green/blue square split horizontally.

However I have also been told the square would be yellow/green split diagonally, but I have been unable to trace any photo or documentary evidence of this.
I know that the Recce used yellow/green on their shoulder patches and strips, so maybe this is causing some confusion.

Does anyone know which is correct ?
I am wondering whether the yellow/green was used to identify the various companies within the Squadron during the battle.

    Thanks.

1st Abn Div Airlanding Recce Sqn would be as you describe with white number 41 on a square with the upper half in green and the lower blue.

6th Abn Armoured Recce Regt was a maroon square with the pale blue number 79.

Bear in mind that these are vehicle Tac Signs and are not part of the same system as the formation patches on uniforms which relate to particular units within a formation.

    I hope this helps

    Regards

    Mark

    Thanks, Mark.
Think I won the argument with my friend before we hopefully take the jeep to Arnhem (with the correct signage).

to play safe, from images at the time the correct signage is at least a white 41 on the front bumper / rear panel with troop markings white on OD on tin plate for the spare wheel. try to avoid using pale blue for the bonnet serial number.
the green/blue tactical colours were introduced in 1945.
