On its way but the sellers pics for now, parachute/airborne forces maroon beret with Brigadier/Colonel or Staff Officers bullion badge.

It has the ribbed silk edging typical of WWII and early post war officers private purchase berets made by such makers as Herbert Johnson and others. The badge is Queens crown suggesting post 1953/54 date for the badge, though the beret could be reused considering his rank, that said a date in the 1970's is also possible but I think probably not any newer than that as newer versions of the badge tend to have maroon backings for para/airborne use.

In spite of the lack of interest (not being WWII German I assume), it arrived today and in the hand it is obviously 1940's to 1950's in date for the Beret, probably mid 1950's assuming it only ever had the one badge on it which seems likely, it is stitched on with near invisible stitching obviously done by a proper tailors. Hidden behind the sticky sweat diamond is a Moss Bros tailors label. The sweat diamond of the horrible sticky type is that seen on wartime and early post war headgear and the label is correct for the latter period. As the badge is Queens crown mid 50's again seems correct.

As he was Brigadier or Colonel by the mid 50's I assume he was a WWII veteran, though sadly it is not named.

Not a common item to see, a senior parachute regiment or airborne force private purchase maroon beret, though perhaps not many to everyone's cup of tea it seems, but jeez, this is a rare item.........

The lack of interest in this beret probably IS because it isn't German WW11... in recent months, anything that isn't Nazi seems to get ignored.

Indeed, the focus on WWII German items does seem to be the only interest for most here. A shame, I used to collect tr german along with much else beside, but felt a change was in order for me and for a long time still looked at such, but only rarely now as how many one decal or no decal repainted german helmets does one need to see. I know a lot of collectors have left the forum or only rarely bother any more because of the same thing.

A high ranking para beret is a rare item to see.

Well I like it Jerry. I've always believed no one made better bullion badges than the British. But I also have a broad interest in militaria which includes some German types from both WW1 and WW2, but also New Zealand Army militaria which pretty much no one collects. Well, maybe a few. But there is rising interest in British stuff, such as the MkII helmets and anything wartime regarding the paratroops & Commandos (note the price of helmets these days). Post war, 1950's there is probably a drop off in interest. But good for any that do collect as prices will be moderate. There are specialist forums devoted to single type militaria, which no doubt provide more expertise, but I like the "supermarket" approach of WRF where there is something for everyone. Hope that Roman digging is going well. Regards.

Great beret Jerry! I reckon with the facts you already have and a little applied investigation of Army Lists etc you should at least manage a fairly narrow short list unlike having to consider the whole Army.
As for your other points I do tend to agree though I can't explain the trend. For my part I am equally interested in multiple facets of the hobby so I am still enjoying what for me still on of the top forums (some are very "niche" of course). Don't be put off and thanks for showing.

    Regards

Very nice indeed. A great item.

As an aside I once saw a wartime one at a 1940's dance back in the 1990's. The guy wearing it had hired it from a costume hire shop!

    Cheers, Ade.

Jerry B, I tried to PM you but it seems your PM function is disabled.

My friend has such a beret owned by a more recent Brigadier of the Parachute Regiment from the 1980s. He was wondering how much such a beret would be worth?
