P51 Mustang Fuel Filler Cap Relic.
This was one of a few items i bought at the Malvern Military Convention in March. Its a fuel filler cap from an American P51 Mustang escort fighter reportedly shot down during a raid on Regensberg, Germany. Sadly that was the only data i had with the piece which i think is a just a nice item of aviation memorabilia. I once had a massive collection of such items but had to trim it all down so much of it has gone now. This was just one of those nice items i had to snap up.

Re: P51 Mustang Fuel Filler Cap Relic.
Very nice relic
Has it got any numbers stamped anywhere on it ? They might be under some of the corrosion but, if it has got a number stamped on it, the first three will tell you what type of mustang it was (e.g. 106 = P51 B , 109 = P51 E)
Cheers

Hi Steve, Thanks for that info. There is numbering present part of the black rubberised seal and it is -10450-2 apart from these there are no stampings i can see in the metal parts. Would the above numbering be significant? Thanks again Steve. Regards, Tim.

Re: P51 Mustang Fuel Filler Cap Relic.
The 10450 is the part number and the '2' denotes which side it's for. Before the dash ( -10450 ) should be the three numbers you need.
Cheers

Drat it Steve the three numbers before the - are missing as a chunk of that part of the rubber has been torn away! Never mind though its a nice interesting piece anyway. I had actually sold off all my aviation relics but for one of those unexplainable reasons only us collectors could understand i just liked it, thought it was quirky and bought it. It was originally priced at £85 and a couple of dealer mates of mine had bought it to sell on. They asked me what best price would be so i suggested £45 and if it doesnt sell by end of the day i would buy it off em. Thankfuly it was still there and so i bought it. Glad i did really Steve. Thanks loads for that info as its most welcome. Regards, Tim.

Have to admit Steve ive not come across many P51 relics. Sad the history of this item was not intact with it as i would have liked to known but never mind! Im sure if you stick with it you will find one one day mate! Tim.

Re: P51 Mustang Fuel Filler Cap Relic.
Steve, the 106 does not always denote a P-51B, we found a D model Mustang a few years back and the fuel tank stated clearly P-51B. When produced they created more B tanks then planes and as the tank was identical to the D, they never changed the labels/codes. Danny
