I do believe the "21" is not a style but the amount of silver on the spoon. Numbers on Silverplate - Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks & Makers' Marks

In this example, the spoon mirek51 presented, it is plated silver with 90 grams of silver. For Wellner, the boxed 21, is no doubt the style, which apparently was a common style back in that period. German manufactures had a government mandate to stamp silver content on their silverware/flatware. For plated silver, Germany stamped 20, 40, 60, 90 or 100...etc on their flatware. 21 was not a German standard for grams of silver plate. That's my understanding of the marks...if someone else knows, please clarify. Regardless, the spoon is not a Speer spoon.

Good catch. Yannes book must be incorrect. All of the Snyder examples I found have a 21 in a square. That must just be a coincidence (or they're all from the same flatware set)....now seeing your picture.

Good examples! Thanks for the education! Another reason not to have much confidence in Yannes guide...unless he meant something different when he mentioned style.

In his later publications the information was corrected to the gram weight. But as with any publication information should not be taken as gospel. Always good to do your own research.
