Hello-I have often seen photos & film of the RAD parading with these in their paramilitary uniforms pre war-I suppose the shovels scared the neighbours a little less than K98s! Must be a fairly rare item to have survived all that digging in WW2.

    Hi Horst
That's a nice piece of equipment. This is the sort of gear I like to collect and I wouldn't mind that in my collection. Thanks for letting us see it.

Thanks fellas - the spade does have some maker marks on it but due to the wear very hard to make out.

Have had a few ask what it states on the plaque attached to the spade, it reads around the edge"Ob arm oder reich ich mach euch gleich"(if rich or poor I will make you equal) and on the face it reads "Reichs arbeit Dienst 1935".

As a naive kid in the 70's, I was offered one of these RAD shovels from a friend's
father - a WWII German Vet - Siegfried Goerner. He used it in his vegetable
garden for years. It still retained the plaque and some colour and was
extremely well made. They were moving to British Columbia, Canada
from Ontario and did not have room to take it with them on the
school bus he converted into a camper.

He basically gave it to me, but like a dope I left it there. Later I wished I hadn't.
The house was sold with whatever contents were left................
    Regards,

    Steve.
