I have had this small piece of what i believe is a part of a Merlin Engine dated May 1939 for a long time now so thought i would post it up & see if anyone can help identify it , it measures approx 2" square . Any help greatly appreciated

Just a thought , would it just be an engine serial number plate ? also the weaved material on the backside is made from wire
I believe this was for a "Watts" R/H tractor propeller as used on the "Merlin II" engine.

It is my belief that this was a data plate fitted to the propeller itself not the aircraft. RAF Museum would be a good start for information regarding propellers.
