Can’t help you at the moment mate....but I’m on the case....either way Greg will come along in a moment with the answer!
Galt Glass Laminates was a British company which seemed to specialise in glass-fibre constructions, including EOD equipment. The main man behind it seems to have been one Granville Stewart Galt, who had something of a career in the military in WW2 (see Obituary: Granville Stewart Galt, inventor | The Scotsman ) He died in 2013, and although I cannot so far find the date that Galt Laminates ceased trading it must have been some time before that.
As mentioned above they seem to have had some special interest in EOD equipment (by the way Galt is menioned elsewhere as being involved with the development of Chobham armour, but I haven't investigated that at all) and I have found a Natick report (EFFECTS OF EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE DISPOSAL (EOD) ARMOR ON THE GROSS BODY MOBILITY, PSYCHOMOTOR PERFORMANCE, SPEECH INTELLIGIBILITY, AND VISUAL
FIELD OF MEN AND WOMEN - 1981 ) which includes the following -
"5. Commercial t Armor. This condition consisted of the subject wearing the same
clothing as in the No Armor condition with the addition of a six-piece EOD suit manufactured
by Galt Glass Laminates Ltd. of Great Britain. The suit is commercially known as the Mark II
EOD suit (NATO stock # 8470-99-130-3011 ), and includes a helmet (NATO stock
#8740-99-130-3008) with faceshield and communications headset. Helmet size adjustment
is accomplished by the inclusion or exclusion of foam pads. The faceshield is adjustable to
three positions. The chest plate and pelvic plate are inserted into pockets in the front apron.
The front apron includes a high collar, sleeves, and zipper up the back. The back apron attaches
to the front apron by means of hook-and-pile fasteners at the shoulders and sides of the front
and back aprons. The leggings are worn under the aprons and are hung from adjustable
suspenders off the shoulders. The faceshield is 2 em thick; the aprons and trousers are 0.7 em
thick. The weights of th e components of this suit are presented in Table 2; the suit was
manufactured and furnished in only one size: large regular. Photographs of the Commercial C
Armor condition are presen ted in Figures 17 and 18 for men and Figures 19 and 20 for women. "
The photos do show the helmet, but unfortunately obscured by all the add-on junk so beloeved by some (and so necessary in actual use!) that I can;t tell whether it is the same as the one posted. I haven;t had any result searching for the NSN given.
Anyway, it would seem likely to be an EOD helmet rather than an AFV one, and something quite uncommon too. Gosh.
(There's probably a lot more to all this but I have found enough to satisfy *my* curiosity!)
Thank you both for the info , I dont think its a EOD helmet from working in this field and not seeing a helmet like this and having no fixing for a visor , To me looks to have cut outs for ear phones like the AFV helmets ,
Well, just before seeing the most recent message I did what I should have done first and checked Google images, and what do we find but
EOD MkIII Bomb Disposal Helmet
British Army EOD Composite Helmet & Visor 1985 NI Northern Ireland The Troubles | #514847621
Now, I'm not claiming these are all identical (they're obviously not) but ...oh I dunno.
could it be Horse?......I know the ear's would be flattened but...... :-)
ie a Horseguards non-ceremonial-walking-through-London-at-the-crack-of-dawn type thingy?
hey, perhaps its Horse-bourne EOD?......they ride really fast past the device grabbing at bits as they hurtle past....it could work......
Seriously though, I'm trying desperately to remember the helmets they wore when I used to see a troop of them riding thru Town......a really splendid sight they were too
You're probably thinking of something like this, which I puchased from a Belgian dealer (along with a few others) some years back. Turned out to be a a riding helmet - was so embarrassed by my mistake that I gave it to a charity shop...
Incidentally the Galt helmet showed up on ebay almost immediately (you're probably bidding on it). If I had known it was for sale rather than part of someone's actual collection I would have still done the research but wouldn't have taken the time to write it up properly. Vaguely annoying.
....which charity shop? :-))))
Hi Greg Thank you for your research and time but I don't collect these helmets and just wanted to show it out of interest to those who do collect these helmets
I’m now the new proud owner of this wonderful piece. Thank you Kradders!
I can assure the Forum that there’ll be no sleep until I find out what it is.......but there may be some sleep......and I may not find out.....but on the basis that only 4 of us give a FF I’m hoping that if/when we DO crack it I want that post to be on New Posts for 3 days.....what do ya say?
