The fuze thing on the bottom was basically a shotgun cartridge and would have been perfectly safe. In the highly unlikely event it was still live, (which, given the nature of the fin it almost certainly wasn't), a quick soak in water and a bit of poking through the holes would have cleared it away completely.
You just threw away a perfectly good relic!!
