This week came with mild weather making it possible to do some treasure hunting again. I found some bakelite treasures and a few other small bits. Winter is back for now but we will see how long it last this time

Inka, what's your process of cleaning up the helmets?

I want to clean the one I received from you (the very rusty one ).

Also, what would be the correct colour of the helmet, dark green/sand/white camo'?.

When cleaning up a rusty relic helmet I usually make a strong oxalic acid solution. 8-9 spoons of acid to ca 10 litre very warm water. I keep the helmet there for 20-30 minutes before taking it out and giving it a brushing with a stiff brush (hemp or something, deffo no metal) under running water. Then back into the acid and repeat until you are happy with the result, then a good rinse in fresh water before drying it. When dry I often coat if with some wax but sometimes I experiment with other methods of preservation, i.e oils etc.

Other helmets I have cleaned found in the same area as the one you got have had traces of two layers of green paint, winter camo and sometimes black camo that was often used on the mountainous Litza front.

When I received the helmet from you, the box was full of pieces of rust that had fallen off the helmet..

It's really in a poor state, but that's the way I like them So, it will have to be properly cared for.

It's very sharp in areas and the three pins have rusted out, I do have some spare ones and it will look great when finished.

Some thing to keep me occupied during Christmas
