The hardest part is to remove the rust, dirt etc to get to the metal core. Electrolysis is a good way but doing it he manual way chipping of the rust is also one possibility. If you have big parts breaking off you should try to get to the hard metal here also (these can be glued back later). After that the ison has to be dried in an oven (a pizza oven is great . Then seal off contact with air to slow down the rusting process. Do not use other than soluable substances to do this. Paraffine is a good idea! The sad fact is that rust will start to develop no matter how good you cean the artifact so be prepared to check your finds regularely and be prepared to attack the rust instantly as you see the first spots.
