How big is it? What is the thickness of the metal. Looks like something to help distribute weight so it doesn't get bogged down in the mud. Purely just a guess....

I still think, especially now with the better picture and the size, that this was used to distribute weight on soft ground.
Example, I could see a table or tripod leg going in that little indentation.
