What went in this container?

Article about: This galvanized steel container was found in Stalingrad. It's about 9.5" tall and 6.5" in diameter. I've tried researching it but I couldn't find anything... anyone have any ideas?

If I may correct the previous answer a bit, it's for the 15cm (150mm) sFH 18 heavy howitzer - the 10,5cm (105mm) howitzer was the leFH 18, the light variant

The full text on the lid is "Sond.-Kart. 7 u. 8 s. F. H. 18" or in English: "Special Cartridge (loads) 7 and 8 for the sFH18 Heavy Field Howitzer".

I've personally found quite a few of these, often in rather horrible shape though. Yours is a nice one!

Thanks a lot for the info! That must be so cool to live in a country where you can find this stuff underground, regardless of the condition.
