Hi Dmir,
I believe that the bayonet is probably a 'Yataghan' for the Snider rifle, but with better pictures I cannot tell. If you Google the details of the inscription it should show you details of the bayonet sold at Sotheby's
Cheers,
Steve.
Hi Steve. Thanks for the answer.
Questions do not have on the bayonet. Question concerning the inscription – of the photo 1. This is prize?. Or the particular inscription of owner?
Yes, I would think that it is a prize for a shooting competition. The inscription seems a little faulty, and should read... 'PRIZE RIFLE. 2ND COMPY'... COMPy being 'Company.'
This is prize for the shooting from the rifle. Competition among the volunteers of the second company. I correctly did understand?
Still the question – as frequently it is possible to find bayonets with the analogous inscriptions?
I thank in advance for the answer.
Yes, it was won by Sgt Groves of 2nd Company. It probably originally came with a rifle too.
Cheers,
Steve
And yet-how often can you find bayonets with similar inscriptions? I haven't met before.
Among Volunteer militias of the Victorian era shooting competitions which involved a prize of a rifle were common. In this case there seems to have been a matching prize bayonet engraved to mark the occasion. So what you have is not unique, but fairly rare. A nice find.
Thank you for your reply. The information is very interesting for me.
